Why should you hire Matt Whelan?
Glad you asked. I'm a pretty capable and productive human. I've always thought myself to be fairly ambitious and hardworking whether it be in school or the workplace.
Now, why did I build this website? There is an answer to that question, and I'll try my best to elucidate it to you completely.
In June of 2004, I began my first job search soon after graduating from the University of Southern California. Following approximately a month and a half of job searching in the L.A. area, I was hired by Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and began working as a budget assistant in the hospital's cancer center. I stayed on for a year with CHLA and left on good terms in July of 2005. I loved my co-workers at the hospital, but I couldn't envision making a career for myself with CHLA.
Now that I have had some experience finding a job through the typical job search methods (i.e. newspaper classifieds, Monster.com, job fairs, corporate websites, etc.), I've come to understand to some extent the shortcomings of a typical job hunt.
Job applicants are forced to search through myriad job advertisements and are frantically adjusting their resumes and cover letters to suit the various requirements they come across in job ads. There has got to be a more efficient way for a would-be employee to match his or her skills with a would-be employer.
I want to spend my time working hard for a company where I'm valued and where I am invaluable to my co-workers. In undertaking a typical job search, there are too many opportunities to accept the first mundane job offered to you. The last thing I want to do is to accept a job completely unsuited to my skills and abilities.
Hopefully this manifesto allows you to understand the purpose of my website somewhat more clearly. I want a job, and I intend to market this website aggressively until I find one that is well-suited to my skills. If you have a job you'd like to offer to me, drop me a line. I'm open to anything.
